Psychosexual Therapy.

(often known as Sex Therapy)

Having sexual difficulties can feel very isolating.  You may feel embarrassed and awkward discussing them.  It takes courage and commitment to recognise and acknowledge you might need help to resolve a problem.

This is a talking based therapy, which looks at both the sexual and relationship difficulties either with an individual or a couple.  It takes into account the physical and psychological aspects to help address sexual problems. It will start with a thorough assessment, including a brief history, in order to look at the best possible treatment options for you and your partner?  Often exercises or tasks are given to be completed during the week at home.  You can then reflect on how well these exercises went in the sessions with me.

These sessions give you an opportunity to talk freely and safely about many different sexual issues, any particular insecurities, troubles and difficulties.

Therapy can help with:

·      Loss of desire

·      Painful intercourse

·      Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

·      Rapid or delayed ejaculation

·      Compulsive behaviours to pornography

·      Arousal difficulties

·      Performance anxiety

·      Sexuality – orientation

·      Sexual difficulties following abuse

·      Pain in and around the vulva

·      Not being able to achieve penetrative sex (Vaginismus)

·      Negative childhood messages around sex

·      Postnatal sex

·      Fear of sex

Within the assessment it might be identified that a cause could be physical. In this case I would refer you to either your GP or a specialist for further investigation to rule out a physical diagnosis. Sometimes there will be medication available, however in certain situations, the doctor may recommend psychosexual therapy.
